Book To Movie Adaptations In 2017

Books are no strangers to receiving movie adaptations. Some of them are fairly faithful to their source material, while others merely use the books as their inspiration. Both the Lord of the Rings as well as Hobbit trilogies are based on books. However, as To Kill A Mockingbird, Doctor Zhivago and Gone With The Wind has shown, it is not just a modern trend. One thing is for sure, Hollywood is showing no signs of slowing down with book to movie adaptations. Girl on the Train, The BFG, Allegiant along with Mysterious Beasts and Where to Find Them all made the leap from page to big-screen in 2016, but 2017 has plenty of adaptations in store as well.

1. Murder on The Orient Express by Agatha Christie

The 1934 Agatha Christie novel, Murder on the Orient Express, already received a cinematic adaptation in 1974 with a movie of the same name. With a star studded cast that included the likes of Sean Connery Vanessa Redgrave and Ingrid Bergman, it was considered to be a faithful interpretation of the popular novel. A new film adaptation is scheduled for 2017 featuring another all-star cast. With big names, such as Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dame Judi Dench, and even Daisy Ridley set to star, this is definitely one to watch.

2. The Mountain Between Us by Charles Martin

Kate Winslet and Idris Elba are set to star as a writer and surgeon respectively in the movie adaptation of the Charles Martin novel. It is a “romance-disaster” film, where the two characters survive a plane crash, but ends up stranded in the wilderness. To survive, they have to deal with injuries as well as the harsh weather conditions of their surroundings. The US release date for the film is estimated to be 20 October 2017.

3. The Dark Tower by Stephen King

It seems like Idris Elba is going to be a busy man in 2017 as he is also set to star in the movie adaptation of The Dark Tower. The film, based on the series of novels by Stephen King, will be a genre-straddling science fantasy western horror. Joining Elba will be other notable actors, such as Matthew McConaughey, Katheryn Winnick and Jackie Earle Haley. Although initially scheduled for a February 2017 release, the movie has been pushed back to July 2017.

4. Live by Night by Dennis Lehane

Author Dennis Lehane is no stranger to having his novels adapted as films. From Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone to Shutter Island, the films based on his novels have done pretty well at the box office. This trend looks like it is set to continue with the upcoming Live by Night, based on the novel of the same name and hitting theaters in January 2017. It will be a crime film and was written, as well as directed and co-produced by Ben Affleck, In addition to starring Affleck, Elle Fanning, Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana and Brendan Gleeson will also feature in the film.

5. Fifty Shades Darker by E.L. James

The least surprising entry on this list is Fifty Shades Darker, based on the novel by E.L. James. It continues the events that were set in motion by the 2015 film release of Fifty Shades of Grey. Both Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan will be returning as their characters Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. Judging by the record breaking 114 million views of the trailer during its first 24 hours online, it would seem that audiences are eagerly anticipating the return of the couple. Universal Pictures has scheduled the film for a February 2017 release.
