"But I told you, Lee’s watching for him."
"It won’t help," Miriam said, with such quiet conviction that Sooz felt a thrill of fear run along her spine. "Lee is mainstream."
"What do you want me to do?"
"I’m going to switch you to HUD." As Miriam spoke, Sooz found her visor becoming transparent, so that she could see the world around her, with the garden and Lee’s memory palace reduced to a translucent overlay. "Do you see the central panel on the dashboard? The satellite system controls are there. I want you to plug the handeck in and then activate the uplink."
"I ain’t gonna do that," Sooz said. "In case we get traced. I don’t understand all this stuff about uplinks and GPS. I got in trouble just for switching the cellphone on."
"This is different. A phone locates you in a cellular zone, so anyone with the right equipment can track the signal. Satellite footprints are huge, and anyway there’s no location to pinpoint."
A wave of suspicion broke over Sooz, lifting the hairs on the back of her neck. "You know an awful lot about this stuff, seeing as you’re only a diary." She started to remove the visor.
"Wait! Don’t go. I want to help you—"
"Maybe you do. And maybe you want to bring someone here. Maybe you want to bring Stranger."
"Then I’ll tell you as much as I can, and you can decide whether to let me help you more."
Sooz hesitated, then decided to trust the dark-haired girl for a little longer. "What you got, then?"
"First, you need to wake Lilith up. She’s your only chance. Lee’s probably plugged her in to the Scrambler’s charger—"
"Plugged her in?" repeated Sooz, bewildered.
"Yes. Surely you’ve figured out that she’s an android?"
"No way."
"You told me there was no blood, remember? And that Lee wasn’t worried about getting her to hospital
