Madeline Payne, the Detective's Daughter

by Lawrence L. Lynch

The previous reviewer has described this book so well, that I have nothing to add but corroboration.
Read and enjoy. An unusual book.

Halcyone

by Elinor Glyn

This is a most beautiful book.
A child, orphaned is sent to live with her great aunts. Their life in a country mansion, in ruined grandeur, is completely isolated.
Halcyone discovers her own way of understanding and interpreting the world around her. Strongly influenced by a book she has found of Greek myths, and her interaction with the nature she is surrounded by and loves.
She grows, and romance enters her life.

The Inner Shrine

by Basil King

A romance in the pride and prejudice style, without the humour, and an awful lot of pride and prejudice.
Set in France and America, I enjoyed the first half but the end seemed rather convoluted.
