Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger aka cordwainer smith was an early contributor to the "golden age" of science fiction. the worlds were fabulous and well-fleshed but it was the people and their ethical dilemmas that always were at the center of the stories.
this story is good introduction to the worlds he created. if you liked this, there are more stories of his out there...

Just finished reading this book a few minutes ago! I'd rated it high as it is fun to read but I found it difficult to get into it before 50 pages or so. After that it starts to get into you and the reading is fun until de then end.

I think this is the best history never writen.
thanks again.

Brilliant. Sensitively and well written. There is a word used that will offend some. If you can get over that, here is a book that is well worth reading.

An ordinary man called upon to solve an impossible problem in a magical world. This reminds me of David Brin's "The Practice Effect".
