Reviews by Hazel Pethig

Patricia Brent, Spinster

by Herbert Jenkins

This is a wonderful book. A woman who steps out of social convention and takes charge of her own life and happiness. It is well written, and kept me interested the whole way through the book.

Wives and Daughters

by Elizabeth Gaskell

This is a great book. I tells the story of a teenage girl oppressed into stupidity by her overbearing father and her struggles to rise above it. She educated herself through books, and finds the love of her life. In the meantime she has to deal with an evil stepmother and insincere stepsister. A truly engaging book which presents a strong female character for the time.

The Wreck of the Titan

by Morgan Robertson

This is a great book. What it doesn't say, is that it is actually 4 short stories, all sea oriented. It is not quite misogynistic, but very close. Typical for a book from this era. I liked the stories, I thought they were well written. I just wish there had been a bit of follow through with them all.
