Cornelia Van Gorder finally makes an appearance in this story that is remarkably similar to The Circular Staircase. There is the bank failure, Jack Bailey posing as a gardener, The country house, the secret room, ect. The list goes on and on. But for all of that it is still an entertaining mystery that has enough originality to leave you guessing for a while.

There is no Cornelia Van Gorder in this story either. It's the story of Rachel Innes and her niece and nephew who take a summer house in the country where all kinds of mysterious things happen.

There is no Cornelia Van Gorder in this book. But saying that it's an interesting story of the murder of the man in lower ten.

Just when you think that you have this story figured out, you haven't.

The story of two people who find their way to faith and to each other.
I didn't much like Pitt's collection of stuffed animals for the purpose of display which included the bald eagle. That explains why there are so many endangered and extinct species today. And Esther seemed to think that she was too good to live in a little house on a poorer street. The people there weren't of her "class". That doesn't seem too charitable to me. Or how a Christian should act. Does she forget that Christ was a carpenter?

I only wish that it had been longer.

The story of Eleanor's search for God as she makes some bad decisions and confronts her own doubts.

When Mr. Devigne inherits a house from his aunt, he finds two pictures in the attic. One is of himself wearing old-fashioned clothes and the other is of a beautiful woman. One night he asks her to come out of the frame and lo and behold she does!
I didn't really care for this story. It's not my cup of tea.

The story of Sylvia who with the warring sides within her struggles to find who she is and what she wants. I only wish that it had been longer.

The story of Lydia who lives her life wanting more than she's getting but not being able to break free from other people's expectations. It's pretty good the only problem is a few racist comments that detract from the story.

The story of a marriage that gets progressively worse. It's rather depressing.

Vixen goes through many sorrows before finding true happiness.

The story of a young widow who goes to a fortune teller and what happens after.

I would have liked this story better if Enid had been found out and not allowed to just slip away but as in real life criminals do get away with crimes more often then we would care to think. Otherwise an alright story.

I first heard of George MacDonald from the work of Michael Phillips so I thought that I would see it for myself. This book provides much food for thought and many spiritual truths. 5-stars.

The story of Ellie who witnesses a crime and what happens after.

This book is okay but it had such a sad ending. I don't know,it might be just me but I prefer happy endings.3-stars.

This is a great book. I really liked Bessie's character. Great read.

The story of a young woman who goes to Arizona to teach school and what she finds there. A good read.

This book's okay, but the characters make some poor decisions. I mean you can see why they did what they did but at the same time you wish they would have done some things differently. The wife, Margaret, is very jealous and the husband, Dicky, is very spoiled so together they encounter some problems as they work through the first year or so of their marriage. 3-stars.

I liked this book. There are a variety of short stories. For fans of Emma McChesney like myself One Hundred Per Cent is about her. Great read.

This book contains a dozen short stories, none of which is particularly great. If you've read about Emma McChesney, her friend Ella Morrissey makes an appearance in Sophy-As-She-Might-Have-Been.

I loved this book. Emma is a unique, straightforward character who tells it like it is. Great read.

This is a classic children's book about a toy rabbit who wants to be real.I cried when I read it.It's a great read.I love it.

Olive is born with a slight deformity and she feels that no man could ever love her. The true story of Harriet Jacobs and what she endured.I think that everyone should read this book.

This book is about Nattie and Clem(or N. and C.)and their "Wired Love".They are both telegraph operators and they meet over "the wire".It reminds me of internet chatting in as they never see each other at first .It's a little predictable but thouraghly enjoyable.A 5 star read.

I didn't like this book as much as I liked Teddy but if you've read Teddy than this book is nice to find out what happened next.It picks up about 6 years after Teddy left off and I actually didn't like Phebe's character in Teddy but she was a little better in this book though eccentric. My favorite new character is Cecily, she's good for Allyn. That's all I can think to say right now so,bye!

I liked this story a lot. It's about Teddy McAlister, her family and her friend Billy whom she meets in the beginning of the book along with a new stepmother. The book spans about 7 or so years as Teddy grows up.(16 to 23)I thought that Teddy was an original character and I enjoyed reading about her.5 stars.

This story is short and comes across as incomplete.

A quick read that's a little unbelievable but in a good way. I found it a good way to pass an hour.

This is a sweet and funny story that I wished would go on longer. The characters were original.Eve in particular. I liked it.

This is a great book about an amish girl named Phoebe. Cornelia goes to England to visit her Aunt Sophia and it changes her life.I didn\'t exactly like Cornelia half the time and the end of the story is open to speculation and asks the question is love enough when you\'re polar oppisites.

After her little sister gets married Evelyn has to revaluate her life. She moves into a house in the country with a friend and gets a flat in the city where she acts as Lady Bountiful in full disguise.Interesting read.

The Rendell girls from A Houseful of girls appear in this story and you find out what happened to them after that story ended. The foggy day/suicide aspect is alot like another book I've read. The end wasn't as complete as I'd have liked but it was still a good read.

An eccentric old man gathers together four prospective heirs and observes them. The one who fufills his mysterious condition gets the inheritance. An unusual and entertaining story that will keep you guessing.

This sequel to Pixie O'Shaughnessy doesn't have as much about Pixie as I'd hoped but it's still a good read.It picks up a couple of years after the other one ended and we see where everyone is now.

Twelve year old Pixie, the youngest of six, goes off to school and meets many new friends. A nice story with memorable characters. Great read.

Six sisters make up the houseful of girls. They all have their own distinct personalities and the three older girls especially grow over the course of the book.A great read.

This book starts out with the three sisters wanting more out of life, and they get it. It follows them as they fall in love, make mistakes and grow. A good read.

This book reads like a diary, the diary of Una Sackville. It starts when Una's 19 and on the verge of returning home from boarding school and it choronicles Una's life as she matures.

The vain and spoiled Rhoda goes away to boarding school and meets Tom and Evie who are very influental in her life. When a horrible accident happens (that she causes) Rhoda matures into the young woman she was meant to be. A good read.

This book is a good read and would make a good movie. The characters are all endowed with distinctive personalitys and there's plenty of action.4-stars because the readings a little heavy at times.

Iris and Robert the only survivors of a shipwreck find themselves on a desert island and have to adapt which is pretty easy because Robert(conveniently)knows just what to do.An okay read.

This book is great for people of all ages. It's up there with Anne of Green Gables but you can't help feeling that there should be a sequel.

Robin and Donal meet as children and then again as young adults and feel an instant attraction.Donal's about to go to war so their relationship evolves rather quickly. It's an okay read and the middle is kind of slow paced but it picks up steam towards the end.

This book seems more like an outline then a book. It would have been better if it was extended.

Emily is a hardworking, sweet woman of 34 when the Marquis of Walderhurst (54) asks her to be his wife.Alec who is the Marquis's next of kin (cousin) and his wife Hester are not to happy about this and make trouble. An okay read.

When the beautiful American Octavia goes to visit her aunt in Slowbridge,England everyone is shocked because she is so different then Octavia turns the town upside down. 4-stars because the ending could have been better.

I think this book is really funny and a great read.It often asks you to accept impossible situations (such as Jarvis not realizing he had gotten married to well after the fact)but there lies the charm.A fun read for anyone.

This book concerns the Carr family and in particular Katy the eldest as she grows into a strong and likeable young woman. A great read.

This follows Katy and Clover as they go away to school and make new friends.Lots of fun.

Nan and Peter meet and fall in love but unfortunately Peter's married(and seperated). Nan (in a series of bad choices) gets engaged to Roger, almost runs away with Maryon and finally ends up with Peter after his wife Celia(opurtunely)dies. It could have been better.

This book is so-so. I liked it but I didn't if you know what I mean. Sara could forgive anything except cowardice which was weird and it was frequently much ado about nothing.

This book had a good plot but in my opinion it could have been done better. It reminded me alot of The Hermit of Far End as it is very similar. So-So.

I didn't particularly like the majority of the stories in this book but a couple of them were good. Lady Crusoe and The Rebellious Grandmother were my favorite stories in the book.

Derry is said to be a coward because he's an able-bodied man who doesn't go to war but people don't know how bad he wants to go and do his part. He is bound by a promise that he made to his deceased mother that he'd stay with his dad who has a drinking problem. He meets Jean and things progress quickly. Then the tin soldier goes to war. It would have been better if it had told of Derry's homecoming but as it is you can only speculate. But it's still good read.

When Roger Poole rents the tower rooms of Mary Ballard's house there springs up a special friendship that just might ripen into love. I really liked this book and except for a little sadness at the end it was great.

I loved this book. It's a wonderful story that explores true friendship. Judy and Anne meet and quickly become best friends. Though the book only covers a short time in their lives you get a hint of what is to come. Great read.

Anthony asks Bettina to marry him after he learns that Diana is engaged. Bettina says yes but then Diana comes back and she's broken her engagement. Then Justin comes into the picture. He's in love with Bettina and she just might feel something for him. It's chock full of misunderstandings and is a so-so read. 3-stars.

The problem that I had with this book is that the author kept completely changing the personality of her characters until I didn't recognize them anymore. I didn't find myself liking any of them except for Dr. Gillepsie. However there are some vivid descriptions of the emigrant trail and as a historical fiction piece it's okay.

This book is very bizarre and freaky. I didn't really like it. It started out okay but then it got increasingly wierder with idols and human sacrifices and stuff. One-star.

I agree with Louise that it is a good read but I didn't like it as a sequel. It would have been better if they included not only Sallie's letters but Judy's as well.

Young Charlotte Temple is seduced by the vile Montraville and it ruins both of their lives though Charlotte gets it worse than he does. There's a double standard where men can seduce women and are "sowing their wild oats" while the women are branded as harlots. While I think Charlotte was very gullible I also think that Montraville shouldn't have left her while she was pregnant and get married to Julia.I did not particularly like this book.

Yes, this story is pretty predictable but it's still really sweet and I liked it.

I absolutely loved this book. It spans 19 years of Christie's life as she goes through many of lifes experiences and grows as a woman. It had a sweet love story and I cried at the end. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a memorable story. It's a great book.

Hetty gets married later in life to a younger man. They are happy until she finds herself older looking than her husband and decides that he should be free to marry a younger and more beautiful woman who could give him children. She fakes her death and goes to Canada where she is eventually found. The beginning was okay but the story got increasingly farfetched and unbelievable.

After being thrown over by her lover Pauline marries a friend who's in love with her and sets out to revenge herself on her ex and it ends in a way that she couldn't foresee. A short story that is a good read.

This book will keep you guessing till the end. I loved the plot it was unusual and a lot of fun.

A good read that has a solid historical background. I liked it but the end was not that happy.

When Owen Rose comes back from a long trip abroad after recovering his health he finds that his fiancee has gotten married to another man. Hurt and angry he vows to marry the first woman that will have him.
Eighteen year old Antonia Gibbs goes to work as the typist for Owen's magazine (The Bridge) and falls in love with him. Owen notices her infatuation and asks her to marry him and she accepts.
Toni is happy with her marriage until she hears two women talking about her. They say that she is common, stupid and has no soul (thus the title). She tries to learn how to make her husband love her.
Things go along like this for a while until Eva comes into the picture and pushes Toni to take a drastic measure that might ruin her life forever.
This book was okay, but I felt like the author went so out of her way to illustrate how different Owen and Toni were that she never really had them come together right. I could tell you what I mean but I don't want to spoil it if you're going to read it for yourself.

This book runs sort of like a movie in that the chapters end just when something exiting is about to happen and the next chapter will be about a diffrent character. The characters are unique and they grow and evolve throughout the book. A fun read.

This sequel to Tess is very bittersweet. Tess really knows how to keep a promise. Sometimes I just wished that she'd tell and not take undeserved punishment on herself. And what Fredrick did is awful and didn't fit with my previous conception of him. You get to meet new characters in this book and I loved Andy. I'm giving it a 5-star rating because it is a sequel and if you've read Tess it's a must read.

Jimmy gets jilted by his fiancee the actress Cynthia because he's not rich enough for her. After a few days she decides that she wants him back. There's just one small problem, he's engaged to childhood sweetheart Christine. He ends up marrying Christine but she finds out about Cynthia (on her wedding day, harsh) and leaves him. Then she starts flirting with another man to feel good about herself (self esteem problem) and Jimmy (who by this time has decided that he loves her) is jealous. They end up **SPOILER ALERT** making up in the end, very predictably. The characters don't seem to know their own minds and I personally didn't find myself rooting for them. They seemed like just a couple of spoiled children. This is getting a bit long so I'll wrap it up by saying that it's just a rather predictable way to wile a couple hours away.

Tess is not your typical heroine but she has her own special flavor. The daughter of a squatter, Tess is considered beneath the Ithaca village inhabitants, but when her "daddy skinner" is falsely accused of murder Tess sets out on the journey from a girl into a woman. As Tess grows and falls in love (with the minister's son) she must make some tough choices that threaten to rend her heart asunder. I liked the book and how Tess, though not aware of it, touched so many lives.

To revenge his dead wife Lon kidnaps the 1-year old twins (a boy "flukey" and a girl "flea") of the man he feels is responsible for her death. He plans to make them bad by forcing flukey into his trade of a thief and giving flea to his friend Lem on her fifteenth birthday to be his "woman". The twins have diffrent plans so they run away bringing them to new friends and love for flea and reuniting them with their parents. There's lots more to this story but I don't want to give it all away, just know that it's a great read and very sweet.

This book deals with the sins of the parent being revisited on the child. It was okay but got better towards the end. It also has lots of politics in it.
Young Diana Mallory falls in love with rising politician Oliver Marsham but will her mother's secret ruin her life's happiness?

I actually really enjoyed this book although it was pretty predictable. A good read.

This book is okay though I had a hard time liking the heroine. And the terrible secret is ludicrous.

When Mollie is adopted by the wealthy Carl Walraven she's excited about her new life. But the flirty Mollie soon gets herself into trouble, including marrying a man she's never seen! But will the unseen bridegroom turn out to be her worst enemy? Find out in this book.
A great read.

This is a wonderful collection of short stories. I love this author. Good stuff.

Great stories, notice that there's water in all of them.

Charles Rex lived for himself until he met Toby who changed his life forever. A good read.

When Juliet and her dog Christopher Columbus go to a small village by the shore to escape from the whirl of London she never expects to fall in love with the village schoolmaster Dick Green. She fights against it but it's bigger than them both. After they give in secrets come between them that threaten to tear them apart.
A wonderful book with plot twists at the end that I never saw coming.

This is a wonderful book that illustrates the power of love. One of my favorite stories.

This book is one of my favorite by this author. The charactors are lifelike and believable though sometimes you want to shake Dinah for failing to see what's right in front of her. A great read.

This book deals with the power of forgiveness. For those of you who've read The Keeper of the Door by the same author, look for Max who appears in a short cameo. Altogether a strong and moving story.

It's a book that deals with assisted suicide and if it's love that prompts it. If you are going to read it you should read The way of an Eagle and The Rocks of Valpre by the same author first, because this story ties the two books together by taking minor charactors and giving them a starring role. It also gives you more info about the main charactors in the other books though they have minor roles in this one. Altogether an interesting read.
