Mga Dakilang Pilipino

by Jose N. Sevilla

Jose Sevilla wrote this book in 1922 intending it to be a reference material for students who are researching biographies of Filipino heroes. The author had the book published removing all the "n" in place of the tilde g or "~g". This makes it hard to read for modern day students.

In the desire to make the ebook more accessible to today's youth, the "n" were returned in the HTML version. This can be accessed through the Project Gutenberg site:

Ang Mahusay na Paraan nang Pag-Gamot sa manga Maysaquit

by Samuel Auguste David Tissot

The swiss physician Tissot wrote this book "Advice to the people in general, with regard to their health", to help lay people cure common ailments and diseases if professional medical care is out of their reach. Father Manuel Blanco the noted Spanish priest, who is also known for his book "Flora de Filipinas", translated the book into Tagalog and included comments and notes pertaining to the Philippine situation in the late 1800s.

The book is an interesting read on how diseases and ailments were cured at that time. Some cures are shocking to say the least but maybe there is some scientific basis for it? Afterall, a lot of the so called "miracle cures" that are being discovered now seemed to already have been used in the past!

by Modesto de Castro

Ang Pagsusulatan nang Dalauang Binibini na si Urbana at ni Feliza (Writings of two ladies Urbana and Feliza) was first published in 1864. It has hence been published in 1877, 1907, 1925, 1938, 1946, and 1947 making it the first "bestseller" in the Philippines. The book has also been translated into other local languages like Ilocano and Bicolano.

The book is about a correspondence between two ladies, talking about right morals, manners and conduct that should be learned by any cultured Filipino during the 1800s. From 1940 to 1960, the Philippine Education ministry used this material in public schools to teach the youth on Character Education. In 1970 to 1980, the book came into popularity again as scholars studied how this material contributed to tradition and Philippine literature.

by Joaquin Tuason

During the Philippine-Spanish colonial period various kinds of prose narratives were written to prescribe proper decorum. These prose narratives like "Eliseo at ni Hortensio" were also used for proselytization of the Christian faith.

"Eliseo at Hortensio" was read as it was sung in the Jose Rizal household. Jose Rizal remembered a character in this story while he was in Heidelburg, Germany and wrote about it to his family. This book is in the form of an "Exemplum" or "Code of Conduct" (Patnubay nang Cabataan), so it is more concerned with morals than the story.
