Letters of a Woman Homesteader

by Elinore Pruitt Stewart

Elinore Stewart's memorable account of pioneer life and motherhood made me feel like I was right there with her. Take time Jerrine was asking Elinore about her new baby brother-

"Mamma," she said, "did God really make the baby?" "Yes, dear." "Then He hasn't treated us fairly, and I should like to know why. The puppies could walk when He finished them; the calves can, too. The pigs can, and the colt, and even the chickens. What is the use of giving us a half-finished baby?"

Who can't relate to that? Toss in adventure, camping, wonderful relationships and even an interesting peek into Mormonism. My only regret is that the book ended. This one is definitely a keeper and makes me long to try homesteading!

Oroonoko

by Aphra Behn

If you are a very sensitive person, then this book is gruesome and depressing. If you are not too sensitive, then it may serve for history and a realization - if you don't already have it - that there have been, and still are, some very unchristian "Christians" out there - who are more cruel and barbaric than barbarians!

Author of the Day

Ezekiel Nieto Benzion
Ezekiel Nieto Benzion grew up listening to his grandfather's stories about the Jews. Those stories painted a very different picture from the meek victims in the Holocaust pictures we often get to see. After his grandfather's passing, Benzion realized that he was the last one to know some of those stories and that they needed to be shared with the world. As our author of the day, Benzion chats about his family, about strong, defiant fighters and how he picked and visited the locations in his book.
