I am mostly through this book and I find it to be surprisingly fascinating. This book is a very interesting account of life and the people behind the walls of the palaces of pre communist China. The Forbidden City is only one of the places described in the book.
While the customs, religion and day to day activities of the Empresses court were certainly interesting enough, getting to know the Empress and her servants through the writing of the author was the most interesting aspect of the book.
This book makes me want to learn more about the time period and main characters described in the book.
I think it is rather pathetic that anti Christian bigots use the review section of this website to insult another religion and it's adherents. If you don't believe the Bible, thats your right. Leave other people alone...
The review section is to review this particular translation and version of the Bible. It's NOT intended as your own personal soapbox for your bigoted and ignorant snipes. Grow up!
This book was somewhat ruined for me because I had seen the South Park episode before reading it. Nonetheless, the story itself is great, and while I must say the book is quite slow, Dickens crafts and delivers Pip's thoughts and point of view perfectly, and there is constantly that sense of guilt for all the problems of the world within him.
Couldn't get through this one... the premise is flimsier than aluminum foil.
