by James George Frazer

An excellent work on anthropology. It is of course, horribly outdated, but there's no doubting the range and depth of this book.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

by Mark Twain

A charming account of life in the South but it's still a little too rosy. Nevertheless some of Twain's best writing is on display here
