Wuthering Heights

by Emily BrontŰ

In spite of its age, the direct language makes it quite accessible to a modern audience.
It's unfairly characterized as a love story - it's really a hate story: hate and revenge; and what Heathcliff feels for Cathy is more of an unstoppable obsession that makes him gloat in the destruction of anyone who stood between him and her.
I keep coming back to this one, because the depth of emotion in the characters makes many passages a joy to read again and again.

Author of the Day

Madison Kent
Growing up, Madison Kent has always been fascinated by the mere fact that Jack the Ripper, one of the most notorious murders ever known, escaped justice. As our author of the day, Kent chats about this book of hers, Stalking Jack, how much research she did on London and Whitechapel and how her characters were conceived.
