Superbly written until the end which was a bit disappointing. This wont reduce my five points, however.
Military fiction adventure, mainly dealing with handling of logistics and authority problems. The story is about a Sikh regiment serving in Flanders, being captured, and making a great escape. Contrary to the other reviewer I think at least the escape part is fictional.
Wenn man einmal durch alle Höflichkeiten und andere Umschweifigkeiten desjenigen durch ist, der die eigentliche Handlung präsentiert, bekommt man einen Einblick in die Verhältnisse der Lebak-Provinz im Kolonial-Java unter staatlich niederländischer Regierung, also nach 1830. Fehlende Demokratie aufgrund nicht (richtig) funktionierender Rechtsprechung und Korruption sind auch heute noch weltweit anzutreffen. Das Buch ist hier wegweisend und insbesondere die Figur des beschriebenen Beamten durchaus einzigartig, was dennoch sein Scheitern nicht verhinderte.
This novel (not a collection of shorts, as the blurb states) describes the dramatic story of a youth in the historical East End of London. Very scenical mystery, at times pathetic, in any case worth wasting your time with.
