No Orchids for Miss Blandish

by James Hadley Chase

This book isn't deep if that's what you are looking for. It is 100% plot and character but it does those two things very well. It is like watching a great tv show full of action except you are reading and not watching. It's a great book for a vacation at the cottage or beach. I liked it alot, it was captivating and I read it from start to finish in one sitting.

Herbert West: Reanimator

by H.P. Lovecraft

I agree with Loewen below on most points he makes on the qualities of the story. It is one of the most gory and rather horrifying stories I have read by Lovecraft. It is not just the blood, guts and death that are disturbing in this series, but there is also a very dark and sinister shadow that lurks throughout the entire story. For instance, I am very disturbed when West procures the corpse of his philanthropic and noble adversary, the Dean of his medical school. The Dean opposes West's experiments in reanimation of the dead so, post-mortem, he turns him into a cannibal zombie who becomes caged at the local sanitorium for more than a decade. To the insanity and cruelty add gory, furtive experiments, midnight trips to the cemetery, hungry and angry zombie armies. Effective horror is really developed here... if that's what you like. I don't like gory horror stories. I'm probably going to delete this on from my ebook. It's too scary. I'm more a fan of Lovecraft' monster stories; the fantasy is fantastic.

At the Mountains of Madness

by H.P. Lovecraft

My favorite Lovecraft story! I would love to see an artist illustrate this story or a film-maker interpret Lovecraft's vision. Lovecraft creates a richly detailed story of an expedition to an Antarctic enclave of ancient, slumbering monsters. Sounds corny but it is a genius work of horror-fantasy. Lovecraft creates the best monsters and this is his master-work.

This book will give you something to think about. It defines the essence of Sadomasochism without being pornographic. The author also shows how the rudiments of S/M are common in everyday relationships, however unhealthy these manifestations may be.

When love is to hunt or be hunted,

When love is to pine away over someone we cannot have,

When love is to hold another in captivity,

When the service of love becomes slavery,

When love is difficult to distinguish from possession,

you have the rudiments of S&M. This book portrays these ideas with clarity and in good style.
