The Tale of Chloe

by George Meredith

The eccentricities of George Meredith's style, the overflowing variety of vocabulary, and the complexity of statement appear, as was to be expected, in this most brilliant and most human story. Its closing scenes, where the superficial indecision of Duchess Susan is concentrated with the deadly purpose of Chloe, are masterly.
