An Amateur Fireman

by James Otis

A little New York City bootblack spent most of his leisure time hanging around the enginehouse of his district and longing to be big to be a fireman. His friends and neighbors discourage him, but little by little he did odd jobs for the firemen, and finally showed great courage and capacity in a few dangerous fires. From being an amateur he becomes an expert of whom the <>4ih Company is proud. Describes accurately the duties of the Fire Department.
