Amazon S3

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

PDFs are being transferred to Amazon’s S3 storage service; they’ll take far less time for visitors to download and won’t use up our precious (and limited) bandwidth — so other downloads will go faster!

Only 300 or so files are moved to S3 every day, since it takes bandwidth just to upload them and I don’t want to kill everyone’s access, but already the most popular files are being delivered via the new links.

Kindle format

A couple of folks have written in asking if manybooks.net will support the new Amazon Kindle — from what I understand, you can transfer a Mobipocket file to your Kindle using a USB cable; but if a Kindle owner would care to try the new “Kindle” option in the download menu I’d really like to know if it works! (It’s actually a mobipocket file with a .awz file extension…)

Yep, it works, and you can even download the file directly to your Kindle using the built in “Experimental” web browser! Thanks to everyone for their feedback — if you have comments or questions, please don’t hesitate to write.

Thanks to Earl, the correct mime-type is used for newly created AND stored Kindle files.
