LE REMORDS DE MARTÉGAS.

Ses soirées, il les passait en des bouges qu'on trouve, à Arles, le long du Rhône, dans les ruelles douteuses, en contre-bas de la digue du Rhône. Sinistres le soir, ces ruelles pavées en galets roulés de Crau, dressés sur leurs pointes. Elles aboutissent à la digue de pierre qui semble les barrer d'une muraille de forteresse, en fait des culs-de-sac, leur donne des airs de coupe-gorge profonds, où le bruit du Rhône et la voix du mistral seraient chargés d'étouffer le cri des victimes. Les maisons basses, blanchies à la chaux, en ces ruelles-là paraissent livides. Les unes se ferment avec des discrétions louches. Les autres s'ouvrent avec des effront
