Y don Salvador cogió una jofaina llena de agua y la puso en el suelo al lado del perro, que comenzó a beber con avaricia, agitando la cola.

Y volviéndose indignado contra la muchedumbre, añadió:

--¡Pedazos de brutos, animales! ¿Por qué me habéis dicho que estaba rabioso?

Nadie contestó, y el cuadrillero, envainando su sable, volvió a decir:

--Señor don Salvador, le ruego a Vd. que nos perdone por el susto que le hemos dado, pero conste que la intención era buena.

--Ya lo sé, hombre, ya lo sé, y lo agradezco con toda el alma.

Todos fueron saliendo del pabellón respetuosamente, asombrados del valor de Juanito y de su abuelo y sobre todo de la suerte que había tenido el perro forastero, refugiándose en aquella casa.[8]
