Not the usual kind of short stories with plot, but rather incidents, characterizations or impressions of life made vivid by the author's clear style and finished writing.

"Wait for me, Isa-bel! Kezia, wait for me!"
There was poor little Lottie, left behind again, because she found it so fearfully hard to get over the stile by herself. When she stood on the first step her knees began to wobble; she grasped the post. Then you had to put one leg over. But which leg? She never could decide. Short stories about small incidents in ordinary people's lives--joys, disappointments, insults, betrayals. Nothing heroic, violent, or superhuman happens. The descriptive detail is dense, sometimes to the point of clogging up the story.
It's a book best appreciated by a writer; lovers of adventure stories or trite supernatural boogyman stories will probably be bored.
Elegant, beautiful and poignant fiction from this gifted New Zealand writer, who worked prolifically before her untimely death in 1923, aged just 34. These stories gently convey a range of human emotion, at times wistfully, at others with humor.
Astonishing short stories; brilliant writing.
