Craig Digby lives in a high-rise block of flats, striving to make a life for himself away from a stifling family business -- a life that will soon become a struggle for survival. Unbeknownst to the residents of the estate, the construction of the towers and their number complete a ritual started two-thousand years ago.
Something stirs beneath the tower.
Loving parents find that one of their children has been taken.
The front door is locked. The flat is nine storeys up.
It is only the beginning.
A terrible some-thing has been created, stalking the corridors and minds of those living in the building. Craig and a handful of disparate locals realise the true nature of the force that moves among them and must overcome their personal beliefs, conflicts and fears to unite against an evil that can reach into homes, control minds and corrupt flesh... for they alone can stop the Harvest.
now?"
"He's running the family business with my dad."
"Yes, did well in business studies and maths. I remember. He had his head screwed on. I thought you had moved away after your final year."
Craig's family had moved to London from Bath at the start of his secondary education. Losing all his junior school pals in the process. "Yes. We moved back to Bath as Mum wasn't happy." Losing him all his mates from secondary school.
"And you returned to the big city to make your fortune." Was he scoffing?
"I returned for University actually. For a degree. Got a first." Craig corrected and boasted, scoring himself a point.
"Better let you get on with it, then." Benchman flashed a grin and strode away. He took his seat and folded his arms sternly and produced a prepared smile, the same smile that had stared back from Craig's own school year-photos. He didn't know how Benchman could be so fucking smug, from what Craig had read the only notable Alumni the school had produ
Excellent. Could not stop reading, even when I supposed to be working. Look forward to other books by Steve Merrifield.
Totally loved this book, very reminiscent of "It". As a horror buff, I put it in my favorite category with Robert McGammon and Clive Barker. Only problem I had was small editing issues, possibly due to my formatter. Getting ready to read his other book, Ivory. Mr Merrifield really really needs to get published and make some money from this talent!
I absolutely loved this book. Great writing style and pace. You should have made a million of off this one.
Excellent read. Enjoy Craig's humor and sarcasm.
While reading this book I had actually forgotten it was a free e-book, thought I had bought it from Amazon. If a publisher had been involved an editor would probably have done some tightening up of the narrative here and there but all in all a good though gruesome read. I would love to read a sequel with Cat as the main character!
I enjoyed this book, but not as much as Ivory. The characters were well drawn and the story enjoyable, although I felt the plot was not as strong as Ivory. However, I do look forward to a sequel......
It was a great read, Interesting, suspenseful, amusing, I really enjoyed it. I have downloaded the authors next book and look forward to starting it soon.I used to live in London so it was kinda nice reading something based there.
I am also very surprised that no one has considered the book good enough to publish. I have read books that are crap compared to this.
This e-book was awesome i really couldn't stop reading it. The name fit it perfectly. I am now a fan of yours and plan on reading more of your books. I really don't know what other words i can describe this book. But it has alot of horror in it and alot of suspense even had me laughing and feeling all warm and fuzzy inside in some parts. But overall this was a EXCELLENT Horror book, I would recomend it to anyone. Great job and keep up the good work.
influences of Graham Masterton and Stephen King, but a little different, and UK based. Particularly liked the narrative jumps letting the reader fill in the gaps. Also liked the spiritualist character and think that might be an interesting area for future books. Slightly weak in the link between middle and end, don't want to go into detail as it would be a spoiler. Couple of proof reading glitches heals / heels, stopped / topped.
4 stars, for sure. Excellent book. It was a little daunting to follow all of the characters involved, but it was definately worth it.
This is an excellent read and is the best book I have read in a long time. I found it a very gripping story, so much so that while reading the book you can almost see the characters come to life. This definitely is not a book to be missed, you will find like myself it is very hard to put down.
Boring. Overwritten prose. Really cheesy story and cheesy characters and dialogue lost me half way. I think many of those who rate this high haven't read much horror. This is well below par for modern standards of horror as Billy (below) pointed out. That's why its free, I guess. But there are better free books to read than this.
I really enjoyed this. I liked the characters and experienced some genuine tension and scares!
Lots of people seemed to have enjoyed this one, so I had high hopes. What I see, however, is a book that is about thirty years too late. It harks back to the days of British pulp horror, James Herbert, Stephen Laws, which is not necessarily a bad thing but it is woefully old-fashioned in the horror genre. The book reeks of old age, in plot, in characterisation, in style, in every way. As for the plot, it's the age old basic, b-movie, plot construct of something evil lurking in the building killing off the residents. Nothing new there then. It's basically a rehash of Herbert's Rats or Fog played out in a tower block. It relies to heavily on Herbert's plot formula, and it reminded me too much of that awful sequel to Poltergeist (you know, the one that takes places in the tower). It's heavy going in places; purple passages abound. I stopped reading somewhere a third of the way through. Although I have to admit, I did like some of the characters but only because I recognised them as having stepped right out of a James Herbert novel - the photographer, the journalist, the single mum, the medium etc. etc. In a nut shell, I'd give it 0 for originality, maybe 2 for its copy-cat characterisation.
Great! A scary story with great characters!
Excellent, couldnt put it down, Stephen King eat your heart out ! ! !
Great book
Four stars.
Just finished the book. I give it 5 stars. Enjoyed reading and I liked the twist at the end! Keep up the excellent work Steve.
Loved it. I always try to picture what is happening by how the book is written. With this one, I could put myself right in there with all the characters
Great read, kept me hooked, will definitely read more from this author.
Good story. I enjoyed following the characters and I couldn't put it down!
