Martin Roberts has made a successful career from painting, but is finding that his creativity is slipping away - stifled by his family life. That is until he is responsible for running a teenage girl down in his car. Miraculously the girl survives, but stranger than her lack of injuries is her striking physical appearance; stark white hair and skin, and jet black eyes. Being mute her condition and background remains a mystery, but when a black blind man arrives to collect her from the hospital Martin learns that she is a prostitute and that he is her pimp. It should have been the last Martin saw of Ivory, but he finds that he is haunted by her look, she has stoked the embers of his creativity and he realizes he must paint her. He seeks her out in London's streets of vice, facing dangers of this world and another, pursuing an obsession that he learns has led to the deaths of countless others before him.

art and to be a master of it. He often struggled to understand how this life had even come about.

At the corner of the British Library the traffic lights amber winked out and a red light burned in its place. He cursed and slammed his foot on the brake. The stream of traffic on the Euston Road tauntingly left him behind. Life, which for Martin was family and love, was meant to influence his art, and his job was meant to fund his life. Stripped back to basics they were relationships of necessity; symbiotic. Yet his family and his job were also distractions that drained his resources, creatively and financially, and without his art they seemed without function.

A green light allowed him to resume his journey, but the resentment generated from his reflection caused him to lose patience with the main roads, his thick fingers, whitened by their grip, yanked the wheel to one side and turned the car sharply off the Euston Road and into a side road. He hadn't travelled these roads for some time and he w

I really enjoyed this book and thought it was both well written and orginal. However, I was a bit lost for several pages when Martin came home started locking doors then was suddenly flashing back and forth between his home and the altercation with Ebony.

This book was completely breathtaking, I could not stop reading untill I was finished. I haven't read anything this good for awhile, and enjoyed reading it. Everything flowed together nicely, and i rate it FIVE stars. This is one of the best horror novels I have read, and am going to share this with friends!!!

I'm really not into horror, but this book was excellent and very different from what I imagined it would be. Couldn't put it down. I loved to "hear" Ebony's pattern of speach. Found him very real. Now to read Harvest. Thanks so much for putting your work out there on Manybooks, Steve. Would never have heard of you otherwise. Wish all good things for you and look forward to reading more of your work.

Stellar read. Kept me completely engaged and read it nearly straight thru. Had to put it down a couple of times because it was so intense and frightening. Loved it!

Starts a slowly plus some of the British vernacular threw me off every now and then (e.g. “Volvo estate” means “Volvo station wagon”, “haemorrhaging” is not a misspelling). There are also some jarring points in the story: the first time Ivory’s name was used (out of nowhere) and Ebony’s blindness not being clearly described (“brandishing” a cane and squinty eyes does not automatically imply blindness to me).

Pacing was also an issue...despite the theme, there was very little tension in the story and it just seemed to plod along. Despite being a book that's classified as horror, I didn't feel anything near to unease until I was 95% through the story. Jumping around in time didn’t help. There were times were I thought I'd skipped a section or two only to discover that the author had jumped forward in time. Overall, there were very few couldn’t-put-it-down moments and I definitely struggled to keep reading at times, mostly just to see how it ended and have some questions answered. Merrifield has real potential as did this story.

I have read a number of ebooks downloaded for free from the web, and it has been my experience that in most cases it is obvious why they are not published, but I have to say that this book really impressed me. Well written, well constructed story and gripped me right to the end. I shall definitely be passing it on, and have now begun another of your books. Excellent!

despite a little slow paced and a few unwrapped loose ends, this story actually has me hooked from the part where Martin has his first back street tour till tthe end, which is, by the way, a little bit two rushed and hasty for any emotional deposit for the suffered. good read overall and for those interested, you can check out the author's other story available here, havest, another great one.

I really enjoyed this book. I got a little lost @ one point but it was because I didn't catch the flashback thing for a minute. Once I got that it was good. It is a little out there but i like books like that. Kind of reminded me of some of Dean Koontz earlier novels.

Ivory was the first book I have read on my new Kindle purchased a couple of weeks ago. Actually I downloaded the book mostly because of the cover as I thought it looked a little eerie. I wasn't disappointed. After a little slow start (too much smalltalk) the story really came to life after Martin found Ivory at her pimp's place. After that the plot became more and more interesting and the end was really really spooky and a little bit surprising, I must admit. I even found some passages in the book which reminded me of the writings of Ray Bradbury.
Can't wait to read Harvest.

overall a great read with solid narration and involving storyline. the development of several characters appears a bit rushed so much so that they are depicted acting and reacting differently even on two successive pages. also i couldnt find out what became of some of the characters i really care to find out, hope it could be cleared up in the epilog, pity!

I liked this e-book. I found Martin’s relationship with Ivory interesting, not knowing what it was that drew him and the others to her. I was intrigued to find out what Ivory might be, and I wouldn’t have guessed her background and nature.

I didn’t enjoy this as much as ‘Harvest’, the author’s other title, as I found that more gripping and preferred that story, but I will keep a look out for his next title ‘The Pack’ which I noticed on his website.

I enjoyed this book but I have little to say beyond that. The spiral of self destruction seems so absolute and inescapable that it's hard to really put any emotional investment in to the main character.

It's solid enough that it maintained my attention and, in moments, had me looking forward to reading more. Having completed the book I found myself nearly completely apathetic toward the entire story. I don't regret reading through to the end but I really don't foresee going back to examine the book in detail. I don't imagine I'll find anything new. Nothing I'm going to like anyway.

Five Stars for this book. A very well thought out and written tale, a few twists and turns, and I never saw particular moments coming here and there. I enjoyed the book from start to finish.
