Possuida esta simples e clara noção, o homem adquiriu o poder de intervir no meteoro. Em 14 de novembro de 1854 uma tempestade medonha caíu sobre as esquadras franceza e ingleza, estacionadas no Mar Negro. Todos os navios das duas marinhas tiveram avarias desastrosas. Muitas embarcações de transporte naufragaram. O sr. Leverrier, director do observatorio de Paris, procedeu então a um inquerito sobre as perturbações atmosphericas d'esse dia, dirigindo circulares a todos os meteorographos do mundo. Duzentas e cincoenta respostas de differentes observatorios provaram que a onda atmospherica qua determinara a tempestade fôra presentida pelos observadores, e que a catastrophe teria sido evitada se o telegrapho, que caminha mais depressa do que a corrente do ar, houvesse feito passar de observatorio em observatorio a noticia do phenomeno.
