Em 1472, tendo vagado a capitania da Ilha Terceira por fallecimento de Jacome de Bruges, a infanta d. Beatriz fez doação a João Vaz Côrte Real da capitania dessa ilha, na parte de Angra, doando a parte da Praia a Alvaro Martins.

Na carta de doação, encontram-se as seguintes palavras: «havendo eu, por informação, estar ora vaga a capitania da ilha Terceira de Jesus Christo... por se affirmar ser morto Jacome de Bruges... houve por bem de a partir entre o dito João Vaz e o dito Alvaro Martins, mandei ao dito João Vaz que escolhesse e
