This novel tells of a man, Severin, so besotted by a woman that he requests to be treated as her slave, and encourages her to treat him in progressively more degrading ways. Severin describes his feelings during these experiences as supersensuality. Translated from the German by Fernanda Savage. Original title: Venus im Pelz.

"I know your predilection."

"Do you know," I interrupted, "that, since we last saw each other, you have grown very coquettish."

"In what way, may I ask?"

"In that there is no way of accentuating your white body to greater advantage than by these dark furs, and that--"

The divinity laughed.

"You are dreaming," she cried, "wake up!" and she clasped my arm with her marble-white hand. "Do wake up," she repeated raucously with the low register of her voice. I opened my eyes with difficulty.

I saw the hand which shook me, and suddenly it was brown as bronze; the voice was the thick alcoholic voice of my cossack servant who stood before me at his full height of nearly six feet.

"Do get up," continued the good fellow, "it is really disgraceful."

very funny to imagine- but a good book to read.

This is an excellent book, and a classic in S/M discourse. This book allows the reader an insight into the real mechanics of desire in masochistic relationships: the "bottom" is really the one in control, because they call the shots and allow the game to commence. The "top" is often more "enslaved" by their desire to fulfill the desire of the "bottom". The forces behind mashochism and sadism are very different, and not necessarily related at all. Sadists simply take pleasure from inflicting pain on others (a la Marquis de Sade), but masochists are involved in a much more complex arrangement. An excellent read, but not everyone's cup of tea, and that's just fine.

This book is worth your time. The author does so much with so little. If you are looking for a pornographic novel, then don't bother downloading.

If you are interested in a love story of the psyche this book is for you.

Very tame by todays standards. He grovels alot and gets nothing to show for it. Not as good as the number of downloads would suggest. It's fairly well writen, but lacking in content I think.

If you like to explore the relationship of how one becomes a slave (without sex) this is for you.
