It's a fiery hot summer, and sixteen-year-old Jesse Wright is on the run. An oddly gifted boy, he arrives in a new city where the direction of his life is about to change. He's hungry and lonely and desperate -- and beset by visions of a stranger who is being brutally tortured. And then there are Jesse's own memories of a fire ...

mouth made him hesitate.

'Please wait,' she said again.

They looked at each other for a while in silence.

'Are you hungry?' she finally asked.

And if she noticed the sweat that sprang up on his forehead when she handed him the muesli bar from her bum bag, she was considerate enough not to say.

Chapter 2

At first they walked back towards the Old Bridge in silence, which was exactly how Jesse wanted it. But the girl had the kind of energy that, like the river itself, would not easily be diverted.

'My name's Sarah.'

'Jesse,' he offered in exchange for the forthcoming meal.

'Where did you spend the night?'

Jesse shrugged.

'You look like you've slept under a bridge.'

He gave her a mocking half-smile and pointed towards the Old Bridge.

She was shocked but tried to conceal it. Studying her surreptitiously, he wondered exactly how old she was. With her face so expressiv

I came to this after reading Corvus (Lowe's other book on Many Books). Both are great reads and I thoroughly recommend anyone who enjoys this to go on and read Corvus which, for me is the better book.
This is a fresh feeling and at times quite beautiful book. The dense psychological (therapeutic?) territory of the story results in some occasionally tiring immersions into immoderate adolescent anxiety longing guilt and resentment. However these passages are intelligently and compassionately observed and build underlying themes of second chances and redemption. Some enjoyable extrapolations about artificial intelligence and psi potential which are fun but not genre breaking; gibsonesque ghost-in-the-wires type meme recurs with a serving of mystic transformation symbolism. I enjoyed Mortal Ghost considerably more than I expected to, I read it in one sitting last night well past when I should have been asleep. Proved to be a genuinely satisfying read for a slightly jaded long time consumer of fantasy and sci-fi and I will look for other titles from this author.
Don't waste your time. Too many sub plots that are never resolved. The ending leaves you wondering why you read the book.
This a terrific book, really well written and thrilling. I was totally amazed to find it online. When will there be a new one?

This book was okay. I think the author has a fantastic writing style and is very talented, and I was excited about this story from the beginning. It was captivating. The characters were written very well. I especially loved Sniggy.

However, by the second half, the story had too many subplots that were not fully developed, and I think the author was trying really hard to "stump" the reader--so hard that the story stopped making sense. When I finished, I thought about the different plots, and I had to essentially tell the story to myself again in my own words in order to put it together. But what I put together did not cover half of the questions I had about other points of the story. In the end, I truly felt that I had wasted my time reading this book, considering how excited I was to start.

Another thing I have to bring up is the graphic content and language in this book. I was unaware that a YA fantasy novel could contain this material, so I believe there should be a disclaimer (maybe there was and I missed it..) warning the reader.
This is excellent, the excerpt doesn't show what a compelling, vivid style the author has. Following Jesse's story, finding out about what he thinks his past contains, and then the twists which follow, as well as the inter-relationships between the key characters and the look at families, good and bad, had me hooked all day long till I reached the final page. I especially liked the mystical and SF elements, reminds me of early John Wyndham in places. Unmissable.
