Ann has lived in the greater Seattle area since she headed for the University of Washington and fell in love with Seattle… and her future husband. As our Author of the Day, she tells us all about her book, Just the Way You Are.

Please give us a short introduction to what Just the Way You Are is about.

“Just the Way You Are” is the first book in a four-book, contemporary romance series. Each book stands alone, but they all fit together.

What inspired you to write this book?

Some years ago, my husband and I visited tiny Bandon, Oregon, where we booked a room at a bed and breakfast, right on the water. We had a wonderful time! The owner and proprietress was a lot of fun and a great cook. She not only served delicious breakfasts to a houseful of guests, she also cared for two permanently injured seagulls. She spoiled those gulls rotten, feeding them a hot breakfast every morning. We loved that, and had such a good time that I came home with an idea for a new series centered around a bed and breakfast in a small fictitious town loosely based on Bandon. The gulls are there too.

In a world where one in every two marriages end up in divorce, do you still believe in love and happy endings? Why?

Love makes the world go ‘round, that’s why! Lasting love is something I wish for everyone. It may take one or two tries to find the right person, and often takes hard work and commitment, but it is possible. I know this first hand. My husband and I have been together umpteen years. Our marriage hasn’t always been easy, but we worked hard to build on what we started with. We’re happy and still very much in love.

Besides writing, what other secret skills do you have?

I love to cook, especially after a long day of writing. Cooking is also a great way to use my non-writing creative skills.

You have published over 35 novels, as well as several short stories and novellas. How do you manage to be so productive?

Good question! I’m passionate about what I do, which makes writing both fun and challenging. Plus I get to be in charge. I think all writers enjoy that. And I take quality time off for myself, which replenishes my creative well.

Why did you pick a small town as the backdrop for your book?

I love small towns, where people tend to know way too much about each other. This often adds conflict to the story because hey, my business is none of yours. In a small town, that doesn’t always apply.
