Demitria Lunetta - An Academy for Gods, Monsters, Vampires, and Werewolves
fireflood2

Demitria Lunetta is the author of YA and MG books and loves all things urban fantasy. Her current UF Titles includes The Mythverse complete series and Down & Dirty: Supernatural Cleaning Service. As our Author of the Day, she tells us all about her book, Fire & Flood.

Please give us a short introduction to what Fire & Flood is about.

Fire & Flood is the first book in the seven book Mythverse series. After a tidal wave destroys her life, Edie finds out that Greek Gods are real, as are monsters, vampires, and witches. She must navigate the world of Mount Olympus Academy, join the assassination class, and avenge her family. All while trying to deny her feelings for a brooding vampire classmate.

What inspired you to create the Mount Olympus Academy?

My co-authors, Kate Karyus Quinn, Marley Lynn, and I knew we wanted to create a modern take on Greek Gods and legends. We thought mixing in "new" creatures would make Edie's world more fun -- and dangerous! We also added in a mean girl vampire roommate, a best friend seer, a tortured love interest and tons of quirky friends. We definitely ran with the idea!

Why do you write Urban fantasy? What drew you to the genre?

Urban fantasy is such a great genre, you can do so many different things. My co-author, Kate, was the one who first suggested a writing project together, and Academy seemed like a fun place to start.

Tell us more about Edie. What makes her so special?

Edie is a fish out of water main character, trying to figure out what makes her special. I think that's very relatable. It's a spin on the "chosen one" trope, where she herself has no idea how she can be anything other than just Edie. I think Edie is also special because she doesn't give up. Thrown into another world, she is determined to find out what happened to her family.

Besides writing, do you have any other secret skills?

I am a champion television watcher...does that count? 🙂 In all seriousness, I love any form of storytelling.

Readers say you include a lot of humor and banter in your stories. Why do you take this approach?

Well, I, for one, am hilarious. Or at least I think I am. Kate, Marley, and I all have that snarky sense of humor, maybe it's a growing up in the 90s thing!

How much of your own life experiences have you written into the story?

Well, I did live in the Florida...but I think that's about it. This one is fully from our imagination. It makes it more fun to write!

Tell us more about the cover and how it came about.

Kate actually designed the cover and we've just recovered the entire series! She's multi-talented, she even designed my author logo! Marley and I mostly leave the cover designs to Kate, she has a real knack, though of course just like any good partners we throw our two cents in from time to time.

This book is part of a series. Can they be read as standalones - how do the books tie in with one another?

We did a little something different with the mythverse series. Books 1-3 follow Edie at Mount Olympus Academy. Then there is Christmas short (Chaos & Christmas -- FREE to download!!!) that acts a prologue. Books 4 & 5 follow Brandee Jean as she navigates Amazon Academy, and Books 6 & 7 switch over to Mavis, Edie's sister as she tackles Underworld Reformatory. Books 1, 4, & 6 are free for a limited time. It's best to read them in order to get the full mythverse experience.

When starting on a new book, what is the first thing you do?

Sit my butt on the couch with a cup of tea in hand! It really is just about putting in the time and getting the words on the paper!

What are you working on right now?

My UF co-authors and I are working on a new series, Down & Dirty Supernatural Cleaning Service. It's set in the same world as Mythverse, but with a grown-up flavor. There are even some crossover characters, including a sexy one-eyed werewolf!
