Dora Blume is a middle school English teacher by day, writer by night. She tends to write books with spunky, bad-ass female characters, random movie quotes from the 90’s, and page-turning adventure. She lives just outside of Minneapolis with her two dogs, Jack and Bailey. Reading is her life’s passion. She even gets paid to share a love of reading with others. As our Author of the Day, she tells us all about her book, The Enchanted Crossroads.

Please give us a short introduction to what The Enchanted Crossroads is about.

Enchanted Crossroads is about a lawyer, who discovers, after the death of her birth mother, that she's a witch. On her journey, she meets Leif, the leader of the Minneapolis coven. As she's hunted because of her birth, she discovers her role as an important witch. She will save the world if she is able to thwart the hunters sent to kill her.

Tell us more about Kaira. What makes her so special?

Kaira is still one of my favorite characters. She is a lawyer raised by a single mother. She is one of the many strong women that I've written. At first, she came off as reserved, but in the courtroom, or when backed against a wall, she really shines. Kaira is a woman on a mission. Her mother has seen the toll drugs have taken, and Kaira made it her mission to help the cause. When she discovers she has sisters that are being hunted, her mission changes. Her loyalty to family will not let her do anything else. Being raised by her mother, family means so much to her. Learning that she wasn't an only child, changes her life forever. Her father ends up being a vengeful God who sends warlocks to hunt her. The five sisters are the only ones who can kill him, or so he believes.

You are an English teacher by day. How has this influenced your writing?

I teach middle school English. I am always inspired by my students. We share writing and I love seeing the things they come up with to write in class. They are incredibly creative and surprise me every day.

Do any of your characters ever take off on their own tangent, refusing to do what you had planned for them?

All of my characters have a life of their own. I tend to write without much planning. I spend a lot of time creating the characters then I discover who they are on the page. They often take on a life of their own. For example, Haskell and Shar, two characters in The Enchanted Crossroads demanded their own book. I ended up writing a novella for them shortly after I finished writing The Enchanted Crossroads. I always start books with a character that sort of comes to me. They tend to take over, I'm not sure how else to describe it.

Do you have any interesting writing habits? What is an average writing day like for you?

I do not have an average writing day. I fit writing in between all kinds of things. I woke up at 4:30 this morning to fit in a few writing sprints before I left for work. I will squeeze another in at lunch. Some days I am able to get another in after teaching. Some days my middle schoolers take all I have and I can't write. Every day is different. On the weekends I will get up and write for about three to four hours straight. Luci, my new kitten, likes to interrupt that process often. In the summer, I love writing on my deck. It is by far my favorite place to write with the bluff and birds chirping around me.

What are you working on right now?

Right now I am working on Scarlet Corrupted, book two of the Raven vampire assassin series and another supernatural hunter series. Cally came to me and demanded to be written so I have been working on both. I love Hope and enjoy writing strong women. She was a skilled detective before turning into a vampire. I love seeing how she's already grown in the two books. The next book will be out on July 6th.

Where can our readers discover more of your work or interact with you?

I spend the most time in my facebook group. I am a bookaholic. I can read 100 pages an hour (that may be my special talent.) I like to share books there often.
