E.A. Chance is a writer of suspense, thriller, and post-apocalyptic women's fiction. She loves books that influence her writing and her life and thrives on crafting tales of everyday superheroes. She has traveled the world and lived in five countries. She currently resides in the Williamsburg, Virginia area with her husband, is the proud mother of four grown sons, and Nana to one amazing grand-darling. (E.A. Chance also writes as Eleanor Chance).  As our Author of the Day, she tells us all about her book, Hope Ignites.

Please give us a short introduction to what Hope Ignites is about.

Hope Ignites opens two years after a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) struck Earth – killing billions and destroying all vestiges of modern technological life. Dr. Riley Poole’s daughter Julia has been missing for more than a year. All Riley knows is that Julia is being held in an internment camp in the country on the opposite side of the Civil War. Determined to rescue her daughter, Riley sets off on a harrowing journey that gets into more trouble than she can handle. She’ll need to rely on friends and loved ones to complete her quest.

What inspired you to write this specific story?

This is a project I’ve been excited about and researching for several years. I’m a huge space geek and devoted Sci-fi fan, but I wanted to write a story about an event that could happen in the real world. It was an interesting journey for me to explore how people would act in the aftermath of a global disaster. My perspective did a 180, especially since I was writing Books 2 and 3 during the pandemic. I feel I’m much better prepared for such an event now.

Can this book be read as a standalone?

Hope Ignites can be a standalone novel but reading it after Solar Fury provides a richer experience with a deeper understanding of the characters, world conditions, and storyline.

Old enemies resurface in this book. Why did you take this approach?

I think most of us lull ourselves into a false sense of security at one time or another. We’re creatures who crave routine and normalcy, so we tend to ignore “enemies” lurking in the background. I think a lot of us discovered this during the pandemic.

Readers say that the books are fast-paced and keep them at the edge of their seats. How do you pull this off?

As I write, I get caught up in the adventure and hope to pull readers in the same way. I love reading stories that do that for me.

Are you a plotter or a pantser? Do you plan your stories out, or does a lot of it just “happen” along the way?

I’m definitely a plotter. I’ve tried “pantsing” before, but my plots tend to wander around aimlessly until they plunge off a cliff to their deaths. My outlines serve as general frameworks to keep me on track and purpose, but I don’t feel restricted by them.

When starting on a new book, what is the first thing you do?

The first thing I do as I prepare to write a book is figuring out what the main character’s goal or motivation in the story is, what will happen if she doesn’t achieve it, and what stands in the way of her achieving it. Then, I map out how she’s going to get what she wants and who will help her do that. This process is one of my favorite parts of being a writer.

What are you working on right now?

I’m excited about my new Space Opera series that’s been described as Stargate meets Killjoys meets The Expanse. Book 1 releases in Spring of 2022, so keep an eye out for announcements about that. I’m also completing my Master’s Protégé Trilogy under my alter ego, Eleanor Chance.
