LaVerne Thompson is a USA Today Bestselling, award winning, multi-published author, an avid reader and a writer of contemporary, fantasy, and sci/fi romances. As our Author of the Day, Thompson tells us all about her novel, The Beast Within.

Please give us a short introduction to what The Beast Within is about.

It’s a paranormal romance about a man who shifts into a wolf and a woman who comes from a long line of woman who practice witchcraft.

Family secrets play a prominent role in this book. Why?

A couple of reasons. Caleb’s family can’t let anyone know that all the males in the line are very dangerous, they turn into wolves during the full moon because of something their ancestors did hundreds of years ago. And Lissette because her family is special they have the gift of sight or precognition. Not something you want the world to know about.

Tell us more about Caleb and Lissette - what makes them so special?

They’re both adult and in control of their emotions. They both believe in going after what they want in life. But their lives are intertwined. Their ancestry is tied together and not in a good way.

This book was previously part of the Creole Nights Anthology, but you chose to update it. Why?

Lol after reading it again I felt the end needed to be a bit more satisfactory. That I needed to show the past had really been put to rest. I did that by adding an epilogue.

What is the best writing advice you’ve received?

Keep writing. And no matter what keep writing.

Why werewolves? What drew you to write about them?

I love shifter stories and the whole alpha wolf who can be tamed is one of my favorites.

Besides writing, what other secret skills do you have?

I love to crochet. I make Afghans, hats, scarves and shawls.

Which of your characters has been the most challenging to write for?

The Beast Within the character wrote themselves. I’m still working on one of my more difficult characters. Frost in The Ice Man Cometh. He’s fighting with me. I should just give up and let him win.

In your mind, what happens to the characters after you write their final chapters? Do they continue to "live on" in your imagination?

Oh yes. That’s how I get into trouble. Series. lol

When writing from these sorts of perspectives, did you feel you had to sidestep certain stereotypes?

I try not to stereotype at least not in any negative ways. In any genre I build my world to drive my story where I need it to go.

What did you have the most fun with when writing this book?

Lissette’s fight scene. I take boxing so I wanted her to punch someone. lol

Do you have any interesting writing habits? What is an average writing day like for you?

Not really. I don’t like quiet. My mind just won’t work unless I have the TV or music on in the background. Now my cat has a tendency to walk across my keyboard or sit on my lap or head, depending on where I’m sitting. I don’t really have an average writing day. I pretty much am writing in my head most of the time then I put fingers to keys to get it down. Some days that might only be an hour. Some days I’ll write of five.
