Suspense in Paradise... An atypical tale in Amish country

In homage to Agatha Christie, this modern-day mystery weaves together a captivating tapestry of comradeship, enigma, and suspense in the picturesque Amish community of Paradise, PA.

Haunted by the tragic events of September 11, Tina Sheng, a recent university graduate from New York, seeks solace in the inheritance left by her late grandaunt. Yet, per the will’s conditions, she must take on the role of a Christian summer camp counselor in Paradise, Pennsylvania. Upon arriving, she rescues an Amish girl and entangles herself in the mysterious disappearances of young Amish women.

Tension escalates as Tina settles into life with the camp pastor’s family. Can she place her trust in her newfound companions, especially Amelia, Pastor Pak’s eccentric college-aged daughter?

Should she stay or flee back home and risk the loss of her cherished inheritance?

What inspired you to set the story in the Amish community of Paradise, Pennsylvania, and how did you approach balancing authenticity with creative storytelling?

During my student days, I dedicated a summer to serving as a volunteer at Ambassadors for Christ (AFC, a Christian organization) in the picturesque town of Paradise, Pennsylvania. Immersed in the serene beauty of this idyllic location, I often walked to nearby Amish farms to engage with their unique way of life and procure fresh eggs and various other necessities. I also discovered that the vast tract of land on which AFC now stands was originally owned by the Leaman family. In 1874, Charles Leaman and his wife answered the Lord’s calling and went to China to serve as missionaries. Charles’s two daughters, Mary and Lucy, later also served as missionaries in Nanjing.

Now, many years later, I serve as a board member at AFC and visit Paradise every year for the board meetings. I’m still in awe today about God’s wonderful work in the formation of AFC and the Leaman family’s legacy. They inspired me to write a book series set in Paradise, Pennsylvania. This is Book 1 in the series.

Tina Sheng’s journey is both physical and spiritual. How did you develop her character, particularly her struggles with faith and the aftermath of 9/11?

Developing Tina Sheng's character was a deeply immersive process, as I wanted to create a portrayal that was authentic and resonant with readers. I started by grounding her in the cultural and societal context of her upbringing. Her struggles with fear came from a place of questioning and introspection, sparked by her mother's tragic death in the tumultuous events of 9/11 when Tina was seven years old.

The novel intertwines mystery with themes of faith, sacrifice, and bravery. What message or takeaway do you hope readers gain from these elements?

My writings seek to convey that, regardless of the depth of sin, dread, and helplessness, the Gospel provides a means for redemption and reconciliation, inviting readers into a journey of faith, healing, and transformation.

You’ve mentioned incorporating biblical truths and personal stories through the characters. How did you decide on the spiritual elements to include?

Most of my books delve into the profound reality of sin that exists within each of us. I aim to highlight the pervasive nature of sin and its consequences, illustrating how it creates a barrier between humanity and God.

Meanwhile, I emphasize the transformative and redemptive power of the Gospel. Through the teachings of Jesus Christ and the message of grace, mercy, and forgiveness, the Gospel empowers individuals to experience spiritual renewal and establish a connection with God.

The disappearances and murders add a dark, suspenseful layer to the story. How did you craft the mystery while maintaining the book’s Christian focus?

Disappearances and murders are tragic realities in our world today, underscoring the presence of sin in human existence. This aligns with the biblical message in Romans 3:23: “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” However, amid sin and suffering, the mercy and love of God shine even more brightly. This is the Christian focus I strive to maintain in all my books.

Were there any specific challenges in addressing difficult topics like human trafficking and cult rumors in a way that suited your audience?

I adhere to the “less is more” approach when writing about sensitive topics like sexual assault and human trafficking. In my book, Detour to Agape, I shed light on the evil of human trafficking. Despite ensuring that I only included factual information from official (e.g., government) websites, a reviewer gave the book a one-star rating because it mentioned victims sold into the sex industry.

This made me question how fellow Christian authors, particularly those writing for a broader audience, tackle challenging subjects. Is it better to acknowledge these realities more explicitly to do justice to the stories of victims, or to keep the narrative palatable by minimizing distressing descriptions? I find myself grappling with these questions, and I don’t have definitive answers.

Tina is a Chinese-American navigating life in an Amish community. How did you approach blending her cultural identity with the unique setting of the story?

As a Chinese individual who once lived in Amish Country during my student years, I find it easy to connect Tina's cultural identity as a Chinese-American with the distinctive environment of an Amish community. My fascination with the Amish people has also led me to conduct extensive research to gain a deeper understanding of their culture.

You’ve published scientific and historical works before turning to fiction. How has your background influenced your approach to writing mysteries?

I’m a PhD biochemist and have published 120+ scientific books and papers. As a scientist, meticulous research is second nature to me, whether I’m working on a scientific book or integrating creative concepts into a fictional narrative. Before beginning a book, I spend a considerable amount of time delving into relevant literature, both scientific and creative, to ensure a well-rounded understanding. The length of the research phase varies depending on the complexity of the topic, but it often spans several weeks. I also enjoy speaking with friends in different fields, which can offer new perspectives and enrich my work.

What was the most rewarding and challenging aspect of writing Center of Enigma?

Transitioning from scientific writing to creative writing presents its own set of challenges. The most difficult part for me has been learning to let go of the structured rigor that scientific writing demands and embracing the more fluid and imaginative aspects of creative storytelling. It involves allowing myself to experiment with different narrative techniques and character developments, which can feel uncertain at times. Also, balancing accuracy with creativity, particularly when dealing with scientific themes in fiction, is an ongoing challenge.

One of the most rewarding aspects of writing this book was the opportunity to bring to life the legacy of Charles Leaman. Delving into his fascinating journey from Paradise, PA, to China as a missionary in the 19th century inspired me to create another missionary character, Rev. Simon Kang, in the book.

The book has been praised for its unique setting and engaging mystery. Were there any reactions or feedback from readers that surprised or delighted you?

One Amazon review stated: “I have never read a book as unique as this one. The details honestly make it one of a kind.”

It feels incredibly rewarding to hear from readers who find my mystery book to stand out among countless other tales in the genre.

Center of Enigma is the first in the Paradise PA Mystery series. What can readers expect from Tina and the community in the sequel, Essence of Illusion?

Readers can expect another captivating read in Essence of Illusion that not only entertains but also challenges and surprises, weaving in unique twists and distinctive perspectives.

What are you working on right now?

I'm excited to share that I'm currently working on Book 3 of the series. The tentative title for this installment is Allure of Elegance. As Tina’s journey continues, readers will be drawn into a gripping plot. Alongside our protagonist, Tina, you’ll meet intriguing new characters, each bringing their own unique dimensions and complexities to the narrative.
