Rebecca Main - Weaving Stories that Transport Readers to Other Worlds

Do you believe in magic? Rebecca Main does. Her magic wand is a well-worn pen that’s been known to weave stories that transport readers to other worlds. Other enchanting pastimes of Rebecca include traveling and showering her two cats, Dorcas and Pudge, with love. As our Author of the Day, she tells us all about her book, Covet The Night.

Please give us a short introduction to what Covet The Night is about.

Covet the Night is about a woman courting death in an underground palace filled with supernaturals, who may or may not be trying to sabotage her attempt at gaining immortality. On her journey, she reckons with her mortality and morality to discover what is worth living and dying for.

What inspired you to write about someone with Myeloid Leukemia who receives an offer of immortality from a beautiful stranger?

The stakes were set so high for the plot—a treacherous initiation to earn immortality’s kiss—so creating an FMC whose stakes were equally as high right from the get-go was very important to me. Moreover, Gwen’s diagnosis catapults her into a very interesting race with death, trying to outlive her worsening Myeloid Leukemia so she can die instead by a vampyré’s hand, or rather, fang.

Why did you title this Covet the Night?

As it happens, my readers helped me choose the title! It was one of four I’d fallen in love with, and Covet the Night was the ultimate winner of my poll. I’m so happy it won too because it truly captures the essence of Gwen’s fight for immortality.

Besides writing, what other secret skills do you have?

I have a knack for making people cry… Thankfully, all crying incidents have been composed of happy tears as my intention has always been to make the ones closest to me know how much I love and appreciate them. It just so happens that every time I express said love and appreciation, they end up crying (happy tears).

Why Paranormal romance/dark fantasy? What drew you to the genre?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is 100% to blame on my not so low-key obsession with paranormal romance and dark fantasy. I love the wonder of magic hiding in plain sight and the gritty, complex layers it adds to the storytelling. The genres make the impossible seem possible.

Do any of your characters ever take off on their own tangent, refusing to do what you had planned for them?

Not usually! I keep my characters on a pretty tight leash since I’m an Architect/Plotter, meaning I like to have all my stories details hashed out before I begin writing.

What is the best writing advice you’ve received?

Don’t be afraid to write badly. Chase after perfection during the appropriate time—edits!—and write your story without the weight of getting every word and scene just right.

Do you have a favorite line from the book, and can you explain what that line means to you?

I have too many favorite lines, but if I was forced to choose one, it’s this, “What are sisters for?”

Innocuous as it may seem, it’s delivered in such a fashion that the threat underlying it leaves no doubt to the reader or protagonist that they must tread carefully on the path they’ve chosen.

Does writing about surreal worlds and enigmatic scenes present any particular problems?

Not yet!

This is book one of the Ascent of the Wicked series. Can it be read as a standalone? How do the other books in the series tie in with this one?

This book sets the foundation for the entire series and isn’t meant to be a standalone. Ascent of the Wicked also happens to be the spinoff of my first series, A Soulmark Series. I’m happy to report that the first series doesn’t need to be read to enjoy or understand Covet the Night, or any other planned books in the Ascent of the Wicked series.

What are you working on right now?

I’m hard at work on writing book 2 in the series, and, just as with the first, I’m having trouble deciding on a title and will most likely call on my readers for help.

Where can our readers discover more of your work or interact with you?

My books are available on all major retailers! As for ways to interact with me, they can join my community of readers on Instagram or Facebook @AuthorRebeccaMain, or subscribe to my newsletter for exclusive behind-the-scenes looks at writing and giveaway opportunities.
