The first story to feature Sherlock Holmes, wherein the detective resolves to solve the mystery of a corpse found at a derelict house with the word "RACHE" scrawled in blood on the wall beside the body. A story of lost love, revenge, and mystery!

easy to draw out, though he can be communicative enough when the fancy seizes him."

"I should like to meet him," I said. "If I am to lodge with anyone, I should prefer a man of studious and quiet habits. I am not strong enough yet to stand much noise or excitement. I had enough of both in Afghanistan to last me for the remainder of my natural existence. How could I meet this friend of yours?"

"He is sure to be at the laboratory," returned my companion. "He either avoids the place for weeks, or else he works there from morning to night. If you like, we shall drive round together after luncheon."

"Certainly," I answered, and the conversation drifted away into other channels.

As we made our way to the hospital after leaving the Holborn, Stamford gave me a few more particulars about the gentleman whom I proposed to take as a fellow-lodger.

"You mustn't blame me if you don't get on with him," he said; "I know nothing more of him than I have learned from meeting him occasionally i

The book is divided into two uite different parts, although both full of thrill and adventure.

In the first part one also finds very humorous moments as it prtrays Holmes slightly less sophisticated than what he later becomes.

The second part is moving with drama and action.

Hey, Nicholas, I first read this story about 40 years ago (yeah, I AM old). This kinda throw me too, but keep going. Arthur Conan Doyle (or should I say Sherlock Holmes) ties it all together.
Engaging plot with twists that become the signature of the Sherlock Holmes series. You won't be disappointed and you won't put your book down. A must read.
I am a bit confused here. I downloaded the PDF format of this novel and read it till the VIIth chapter. In the end of that chapter, after Sherlock apprehends the man and declares him as the murderer to Watson, Lestrade and Gregson, an entirely new chapter of an entirely new story starts called 'ON THE GREAT ALKALI PLAIN' What exactly is happening??? Is this a continuation of the novel? Or are these two separate novels? I am asking because I haven't read that part and am really annoyed at the fact that it isnt mentioned how Sherlock deduced the fact that the apprehended man IS the murderer. Please tell me whats happening! But on the contrary, the novel up to that point is magnificent! Arthur's (Conan Doyle) writing is so detailed, it really felt like I was seeing everything in person lol.
This book was fast-paced and hard to put down. The description in the book is wonderful, and it almost makes you believe that you are part of the crime scene.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Doyle's work or would like to first read his work.
Ever wonderhow Holmes met Watson? this is a must read. I am not an avid reader but I really enjoyed this and it has ignited in other Sir Arthor Connan Doyle's works!!
