Why were they apologetic? It wasn't their fault that they came to Earth much too late.

Peaceful aliens comfort the remnants of the human race after world war. Good short story with a good ending, although not the ending I had anticipated.
A brief story of one of the last survivors of Earth's final war. She wakes to find her rescuers all around her, many different species. She's angry they didn't intervene in the war, then she finds out why.

I liked it.
"big and small, thick and thin, four arms or wings, all shapes and colors in fur and skin and feathers.” from: The Carnivore by GA Morris. The aliens are inter alia giant bunnies come to save the remnants of the human race. Are they as generous and kind as they seem?
