The other was Doctor Syn, their genial, kindly, well-loved vicar. To be sure it was a little incongruous at times to hear this godly man break out into the most ungodly refrain from the favourite song of the redoubtable Clegg. But Clegg had been hanged as a pirate - so it was said - full ten years before. How Syn's real identity was finally revealed when the King's men came to Dymchurch, and the strange part he played in the mystery of Romney Marsh, make this a decidedly unusual and thrilling story.

"Come, now," giggled the landlady, "not to us, Mister Mipps. Not the way we gets it."
"I don't know what you means," snapped the wary sexton. "But I do wish as how you'd practise a-keepin' your mouth shut, for if you opens it much more that waggin' tongue of yours'll get us all the rope."
"Whatever is the matter?" whimpered the landlady.
"Will you do as I tell you?" shrieked the sexton.
"0h, Lord!" cried Mrs. Waggetts, dropping the precious teapot in her agitation and running out of the back door toward the school. Mipps picked up the teapot and put it on the table; then lighting his short clay pipe he waited by the window.
In the bar sat Denis Cobtree, making little progress with a Latin book that was spread open on his knee. From the other side of the counter Imogene was watching him.

The book seems to have been scanned and run through OCR, which had a great deal of trouble indentifying M's, W's and question marks. Given the constant use of dialect the transcription errors at times made sentences unintelligible.
The book itself is good, along the lines of a landbound Treasure Island. It's just an adventure story, don't look too hard for the meaning of life in it

The Dr Syn tales hold me in their grip! this is the final installment although was written first. The other 6 tales cover the years how Dr Syn became the man he is in this tale. The story has intrigue, suspense and excitement. Anyone who knows the locations and the area of Romney Marsh this is set in, will appreciate the story even more. I love Thorndike's writing style. A real page turner for me.
