This is a very good book about the advantages and disadvantages of love. The main characters are brought out very well by Trollope. Lily Dale (the main character) lives in the Small House in Allington with her mother and sister Bell. This house is owned by her uncle who lives in the big house. So when his brother died and he heard he had a sister in law and two nieces then he offered her the small house rent free. This is where most of the scene is set. When Bernard (the squire's other brother's son) invited Adolphus Crosbie, a very head strong and independant man of London, to Allington he fell in love with Lily and offered her his hand in marriage, she accepted. After this it all goes wrong when Crosbie goes to see the DeCourcy's in their castle and there also offered his hand in marriage to Alexandria DeCourcy. She accepted. As he couldn't possibly jilt Alexandria he decided to jilt Lily instead. Mean while John Eames a hobbledehoy is madly in love with Lily but has no hope being with her. This is a story of the woes of Love. But it's still very good!!!
