The Line Is Dead

by E. Hoffman Price

A pretty good hard-boiled detective story. The dialogue is rather stilted, but the plot and characters work well, with a decent resolution. An enjoyable read.

The Murders in the Rue Morgue

by Edgar Allan Poe

It's only a short story, but it is a true classic of detective fiction, and a clear precursor to Sherlock Holmes. Well worthwhile!

The Adventures of Unc' Billy Possum

by Thornton W. Burgess

A favorite book that I read and loved as a kid. Burgess delineates definite characters and their little adventures, both humorous and serious. Unc' Billy Possum is almost too smart for his own good. The moralizing doesn't detract from the story. The whole series by Burgess is good for any pre-teen, and these are good for reading to younger children.

Alleys of Darkness

by Robert E. Howard

A fast-paced, rollicking action story. Dorgan is your typical REH hero--not necessarily smart, but a heck of a fighter.
