Mas se a lei da natureza é iniqua e feroz, visto os maus triunfarem e os bons sucumbirem, d'onde vem essa lei, quem a gerou, quem a impoz ao universo? Quer a creasse, com o universo, uma vontade alheia, quer ella seja imanente ao universo infinito, é, nos dois casos, uma lei monstruosa, negadora da suprema ideia do espirito do homem, a ideia do bem e da justiça. Contradição inexplicavel: A natureza é iniquidade, porque a lei que a rege assegura o predominio e a sobrevivencia do mais forte. Mas quem me leva a dizer que a natureza é iniqua? O sentimento do bem e da justiça, desenraisavel do meu coração e do meu cerebro.
