This little collection of Legends and Fairy Tales is intended merely as an introduction to general French reading. The stories have been told as simply as possible, with infinite repetition of the same words and idioms to enable the pupil to obtain a good vocabulary almost unconsciously. They have also been narrated as graphically as practicable to arouse an interest in the plot, to stimulate curiosity, and thereby induce the pupil to read to the end.

La petite fille s'approcha et dit à l'homme à barbe blanche qui avait un bâton à la main: "Monsieur, j'ai froid, voulez-vous me permettre de me chauffer à votre feu?" "Certainement," répondit l'homme. "Mon enfant, que cherchez-vous dans la forêt dans cette saison?" "Des fraises, monsieur." "Des fraises," répéta l'homme avec surprise, "ce n'est pas la saison des fraises. C'est la saison de la glace et de la neige." La petite fille répondit: "Ma mère a dit, 'Allez à la forêt cueillir des fraises pour votre soeur,' et je suis forcée d'obéir."

Alors l'homme à barbe blanche donna son bâton à un des hommes à barbe brune, et dit: "Frère Juin, les fraises sont votre affaire. Voulez-vous aider cette petite fille?"
