The futility of life, the futility of love-- Conrad's writing is often dark and melancholy, and this is one of the ideas that it seems to convey in the novels 'Victory' and 'Lord Jim'. However both plot and characterization are strong. The denouement is poignant and remains in the reader's memory for a long time.
Great book by O. Henry. The stories seem so random at first, but later the pattern appears, and by the final chapter all loose ends are tied up beautifully--- and convincingly. There is an unexpected love angle in the book; quite appreciated it.
After reading the book I felt that Lily Bart's life was quite tragical. The story begins so promisingly for her and with her beauty and charm, there is nothing to indicate to the reader the turn that her story will take. Edith Wharton has ably captured the lifestyle and temperament of that particular section of affluent American society in the early 20th century. This is a book definitely worth reading.
Quite a departure from the usual detective stories of Arthur Conan Doyle. However, still interesting enough to keep you turning the pages on your ebook reader.
Compare this with Balzac's Cesar Birotteau. Both books deal with the subject of impending bankruptcy, but the way in which their respective protagonists handle it, is completely different.
