Written in a breezy, conversational style, "The Worlds of Joe Shannon" is a quick read about a guy who invents a way to live in the world of one's choice. There are, of course, unexpected consequences. Great little story, well worth the 20 minutes or so it takes to read it.
This is Burroughs's sequel to "The Mucker," and it is, in all respects, a better book than the first one. By the time you're reading "Return of the Mucker," you've already swallowed the very unlikely premise presented in the first volume and are able to concentrate on what is a fast-paced, two-fisted, adventure-soaked tale. From that standpoint, this is an excellent read.
Written 13 years before the Titanic sank, this story presages some of the tragic events that would later take place on that great ocean liner. While the striking of an iceberg by a passenger ship isn't the real story, here, it IS the most interesting aspect of it. Otherwise, a fair but unremarkable what-might-have-been tale. Quick, harmless read.
Eternity's not all it's cracked up to be, as the protagonist of this swiftly moving science fiction story discovers. Love, however, probably is...but he'll never, ever know. Engrossing.
A girl suddenly begins telepathic communication with a species of fierce, catlike creatures thought to have been hunted to extinction. But they aren't extinct -- and they aren't happy. Schmitz's story is inventive and captivating, even if it does take a few paragraphs in the beginning to give the reader a sense of what's happening. Once grasped, though, it's a great little sci fi journey.
The government in this brief tale of the 24th century so thoroughly controls the populace that it makes Big Brother look like a social worker. Even dreams are managed, which is how the powers-that-be ultimately manipulate everyone. But one man uses his dreams in just the opposite way -- as a means of escape -- and therein lies the story. Tense and entertaining read.
The sole survivor of the battleship "Shane" has a mission -- to get back to Earth in time to warn of an impending alien attack that will wipe out humanity. The only problem is that the "Shane" won't travel fast enough to get to Earth in time, and the only ship that will -- a lifeboat -- is unshielded and would kill a pilot with radiation within days. Garrett's tale of one man's heroism and ingenuity is splendidly told.
Intriguing tale of an impending war between Earth and Mars, and a desperate act that has surprise consequences. I agree with the last reviewer...kind of leaves you wanting more. Still, a fast-paced, classic sci-fi tale that is well worth your time.
