Some major problems: poor writing and dated storyline make this laughable at times. Also, so many typos that readability is compromised. And I really wanted to like it!
This was a great idea: a nice man runs an agency that finds people. Sometimes people you don't realize you've been missing! Chambers is a good writer BUT there's no suspense, no excitement, no chase. Plus it's repetitive. A good idea, poorly executed.
A few minutes after she becomes engaged to her one, true, love Rita witnesses a murder. And guess who is arrested! Our heroine has modern sensabilities (she's well-to-do but studied nursing to become 'useful') and she stands by her man. More mystery than romance, with Rita exercising her considerable reasoning skills. Good story line. Welll-written without a lot of dated, period claptrap.
Short stories built around clever premise of what happens when cursed estate is turned into suburban tract housing (c. 1912.) Not real scary but entertaining. Sort of Miss Marple visits The House on Haunted Hill.
Great premise: Guy looses gal to aunt who is training her to be medium. He fights back with his own 'seer'.' Found characters irritating. But try it, it's may be me,
Short stories joined together by interesting premise. Hero uses newspaper personal ads to find clients and to find crooks. Light-weight but fun. Some neat scientific deductions.
Masked balls, jewel thefts and murder during Prohibition-era Mardi Gras. What a colorful background. The story is good, but the look into 1920 New Orleans is better.
Don't hesitate. Tap that download button and read the first Thinking Machine story. Futrelle has a sense of humror but he also writes great puzzlers. In this intro, the TM offends everyone with his obnoxious personality, while looking for the actress who couldn't have - but did - vanish from her dressing room.
Hilda is Quite a Woman. We first meet her at a wedding reception, where she predicts that within a year the groom will muder the bride! (Read and find out.)
She is a nurse and, of course, runs rings around the male physicians she meets. She becamea nurse to take on a very nasty villain.
FYI, this is a novel, partly eposodic, not a short story collection.
