Suspenseful unveiling of a horrific crime against a bride takes up most of the plot of this book, one of Mrs. Green\'s best. Just what happened and how? Could anyone be that evil? Shades of Poe.

A masked ball provides plenty of opportunity for misunderstanding and mayhem in this fast-paced novella. Futrelle sets the scene beautifully (making you regret you weren't invited) and keeps up the tension. The end comes out of nowhere, but what the heck. It's fun.
Better than average mystery/thriller with lots of action to keep you interested. A simple murder for gain is complicated by hints of black magic and the predictions of a fortune teller. Plenty of conflict between the characters, notably the women involved with the accused murderer.
There's no rest for the reader in this roller coaster ride. The bad guy is really bad and the heroine is spunky but the hero is not the usual gooney twit. Plus there are lots of surprises at the end.
A vanishing bride... not one but TWO siblings rise from the grave... a young woman kidnapped as a child returns home. What a book! It's an easy read up to the end which is kind of vague and murky. But by then, you'll have enjoyed yourself for a few hours.
An "impossible" crime. Unsatisfying all around.
From the start the police make a huge assumption you know has to be a mistake, but the author carries on with it throughout the book. Sort of makes you feel like you're the only one with an intact frontal lobe. Had me wishing that the murderer hadn't stopped at just one victim.
I'm a fool; I read all three Hammett short stories in a couple of days. Now what am I gonna do!!!
Thie plot is complicated but entertaining. (One of Hammett's suspects is a gambler from Iceland.) As usual, there's a neat surprise at the end. Take special note of how he sets the story, describing his detective.
It was Young Bob Teal, the agency's youngest P. I who got it one night tailing a suspect. You might figure out pretty quickly who killed him, but try and act surprised. It's a short trip down a dark alley, with almost more characters than pages. Enjoy!
The best read I've had in months. Woman narrowly avoids death penalty but lets everyone think she was executed. The better to scare (to death) her accusers. Dark and twisted but balanced with wry humor.
"Delighted to meet you," Jake said. "Have a drink?"
"Thank you," she said. "I don't drink."
"Suit yourself," Jake said. "Do you smoke, swear,
spit, or what do you do?"
The gals are as hard-drinking and tough as the guys. Quite a trip. And find out why our poor hero, Malone, has to keep returning negligees.

Aside: note how the heroine built herself a nestegg. Illegal today. Then, not even considered bad form!
