A well-written novel about a man who's different from others: more eccentric, more honest, more philosophical. He doesn't fit in and exaggerates his eccentricity with a disheveled appearance and loud manners. He's an alcoholic. Nevertheless, he has two loyal friends, actually people he picked up and took care of, who worship the ground he walks on. A woman to whom he was once engaged enters the story...but now she's married to a count.

It's hard to believe that WW Jacobs wrote "The Monkey's Paw" when you read this very amusing novel. The characters of the ship captains are hilarious. Highly recommended.

I have read every novel I could find by this author because they are very amusing.

I don't know why the author chose to be anonymous. This is a very interesting and practical book about the process of writing a novel. (I had no idea how much work it takes.) I wasn't going to write a novel, but I like knowing how it's done.

I listened to this as an audiobook that I downloaded from the library. It was "okay". Seemed like a second-rate Edith Wharton novel.

Yes, parts of the book are boring (e.g., lengthy poems), but the majority of it is hilarious. Don Quixote is such a loon but at times sounds perfectly normal. My favorite incident is when he paranoically destroys a puppet show. Sancho Panza is unfailingly funny. I love this book.

I was pleasantly surprised by the high quality of this book. The plot is complex and original. It's a page-turner. I'm now reading the followup book, Baron Trigault's Vengeance.

I read this book because of the two positive reviews, and wasn't disappointed. It is extremely entertaining and satirical. I'm looking forward to reading more books by Arthur Train.

This story is excellent. A creepy, Victorian gothic horror story. I'm glad there are more of these to read. Highly recommended.
