One of my professors in university saw me reading Starship Troopers right after the movie came out and asked me if I knew what it was really about. I proudly told him that Heinlein was obviously parodying facism and making fun of military culture and that these subtleties went straight over the director's head when the movie was made. The professor then pointed out to me that Heinlein was in actual fact being critical of democracy and making a point that nobody deserves a vote purely because of automatic citizenship due to birth. This kind of blew my mind because it was so at odds with the way that democracy works in our country. Heinlein was American himself, so I don't know where he came up with this believe and then managed to hide it so cleverly in his book that nobody else appears to have picked up on it.
This will maybe a controversial response, but I really think that Daenerys Targaryen from the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin is overpowered. Just think about it, she's beautiful, she's cunning and she has enough charisma to convince virtually everyone around her to die for her cause. On top of that she has got a couple of dragons and armies at her beck and call.
Once upon a time, a man named Douglas Adams wrote a brilliant novel called Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. A few years later a British television series arrived that was inspired by this book and really rather good, even if it wasn't a direct adaptation of the book. It was promptly canceled after only a few episodes. Then a few years later BBC America took a stab at the license and created a new show based on the book. In typical American fashion they opted for over the top nonsense like secret CIA projects and slapstick humor to appeal to audiences. Unfortunately, this worked and the show continued for two miserable season before it was canceled. This makes Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency the only book I know of that spawned both a great television show of the same name and a completely horrible one. I suggest you don't confuse the two.
Humphrey Quinn - Suspense, Action and a Lot of Fun
FEATURED AUTHOR - Humphrey Quinn writes fantasy and paranormal series for young adults, or the young at heart.  With today's Author of the Day, we chat about the book: Awaken. When did you decide to become a writer? I started writing very young, throughout school and into college. But I decided to take a break—a very long break of ten years while I began a career in the airline industry. I was just turning thirty when I picked up writing again. I retired from the airline at forty and have been writing full… Read more
