Alexei Bayer was born in Russia but in 1974 he emigrated to the United States, where he works as an economist and writer. He is the author of 3 books all set within the world of Soviet Russia.
He has contributed to the op-ed pages of the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Financial Times. He is also a columnist for the independent Russian business newspaper, Vedomosti. His works of fiction have been published in various US literary journals, including the Kenyon Review and New England Review.
Bayer and popular Russian authro Andrei Gelasimov have cooperated in translating each other’s works, and a collection of Bayer’s short stories, Eurotrash, was translated by Gelasimov and published in Moscow in 2004
